It's not "goodbye." It's "see ya later!"

It’s the end of 2022 and we find ourselves saying “visit soon!” to two of our staff members who have been woven through the fabric that is MNA for over two decades.

Carol Feuss has served the organization and membership in various roles over her 14 years of service. Beginning back in 2000, Carol brought her extensive communications and marketing skills to MNA as the Director of Communications and Integrated Marketing. After 8 years, she departed to explore another opportunity, but missing the membership at MNA, she returned to us in 2014 as our Executive Assistant. She has seen the organization through many transitions over the years and has loaned her expertise to overseeing or assisting nearly every department. Her expertise and historical knowledge will be deeply missed by all at MNA. She has been invaluable to us, but her retirement is most deserved. We wish her nothing but the best as she enjoys tending to her garden and searching for the best Petosky stones.

Ann Sincox has served the membership of MNA for over twenty years. A jane of all trades, she would argue she’s a master of none. (We disagree!) As the Project & Publication Director, Ann has overseen the publication of the MI Nurse magazine and has served as a photographer, videographer, and project manager for many events at MNA over the years. She has also mentored young nursing students as a liaison to the Michigan Nursing Students Association (MNSA). Over the last year, she has assisted our Continuing Education department as well, lending a sound ear and an additional creative brain to our ANCC Program Director, Hope Mwemba. Her guidance and friendship have been invaluable to so many of us here at MNA. We are thrilled for her as she enters this next phase of her life just in time to be a first-time grandma!

Congratulations to you, Carol & Ann! You will be missed but your contributions to this organization will be treasured for many years to come.

“What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.” – T.S. Eliot

Now is your beginning… Our deepest thanks to you both.

Happenings Around the State

Kalamazoo

After a successful informational picket in mid-November, RNs at Ascension Borgess were able to successfully move the employer on several issues, but it still wasn’t enough. After assessing the membership and determining there was plenty of fight left, Borgess nurses held a successful strike authorization vote in early December. The strike authorization gave nurses the leverage needed to move the employer and a tentative agreement was reached with no concessions and an average wage increase of 20.5% in the first year!

Alma

MyMichigan Alma held an informational picket on 12/15 with an amazing turnout! MyMichigan is known for their aggressively anti-union stance but that won’t deter our members! These nurses are united and motivated to prove that they have and will continue to do what it takes every step of the way! Join us in showing your solidarity with them by sending a letter to their CEO demanding they bargain a fair contract!

Ann Arbor

MNA-UMPNC Nurse Practitioners and elected union leaders marched on the President of UMHS, Dr. David Miller, to hand-deliver petitions signed by NPs and their colleagues speaking to the collective disappointment in the position taken by their employer to disparately deny NPs salary increases from the date of ratification of their new contract, that which was provided to the rest of MNA-UMPNC members.

Lansing

On December 8th, Michigan Medicine made public their agreement to acquire Sparrow Health System. MNA represents the nurses at the University of Michigan and the nurses and healthcare professionals at Sparrow’s main campus and home care agency in Lansing.

2023 Dues Rate Reminder

At the 2022 House of Delegates (HOD), the delegates voted to change the annual dues escalator. This was done in light of historic inflation. Prior to their vote, the bylaws called for dues to be adjusted based on the July Consumer Price Index (CPI). This year the July CPI was 8.5%. This would have created a monthly increase of $5.27 to your dues. Instead, with the passage of this bylaws change, for 2023 you will see an increase of only $1.86/mo.

The changed bylaws now read:

Article II Section 6 Dues
LBU members and Associate members shall pay annual dues at a rate established by the House of Delegates, including an annual Consumer Price Index escalator based on the July report before seasonal adjustment, not to exceed 3% unless approved by the House of Delegates. The dues rate for the upcoming year shall be communicated to members via publication in a statewide newsletter after the House of Delegates, prior to the new rate being put into effect.

This means that the increase of dues will be 3%, changing the monthly rate from $62.03 to $63.89 beginning January 2023. Please note that your dues rate may be higher if your local bargaining unit collects local dues.
