In the News!

After almost a year of grueling negotiations, McLaren Home Care & Hospice – Greater Lansing won a ground-breaking new agreement that included an average of 21% wage increases over the life of the contract! Along with wage increases, for the first time they won a progressive step system for wages based on years of licensure, language addressing workload limits, weekend staffing and monthly labor-management meetings!

This war was hard fought, and the battles were plentiful, beginning with the loss of their Labor Rep, Jamie Bissell, to Covid shortly before the contract expired. In her honor, they persevered. They resisted management pressure to take a deal after two months of bargaining, executed a successful petition drive, worked in conjunction with the mediators to come to agreeable terms, and successfully picketed with the nurses of OPEIU at McLaren Greater Lansing!

Though it has been a long and difficult year, it has also been one to be proud of. Not only did they win a strong contract, they also got to know one another better (difficult in a homecare setting) and built their membership level to 100% in the process.

Congratulations to the members and reps of McLaren Home Care & Hospice on a successful contract campaign!

MNA Members are Eligible for up to $2,000 in Conference Funding

The Michigan Nurses Foundation Safe Nursing Practice Scholarship provides up to $2,000.00 for MNA Local Bargaining Unit (LBU) members to attend national healthcare/specialty conferences. Professional healthcare conferences at the national level are outstanding opportunities for nurses to expand their knowledge of various aspects of nursing including patient care and/or fields of expertise. Additionally, conferences provide a unique opportunity to interact with nurses representing other institutions who have similar interests. Unfortunately, the cost incurred by travel, lodging, registration, and associated expenses for these highly beneficial experiences often render the opportunity prohibitive. This scholarship is intended to defray at least a portion of such costs and thereby enable nurses to take advantage of this valuable experience. Just click here to learn more and apply.

New CE Available!

This 1.0 contact hour professional development activity is jointly provided by the Michigan Nurses Association and the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environment organization. The goal is to equip Michigan nurses with knowledge, practical skills, and a sense of community with other nurse colleagues working to address Climate Change and its impact on the health of Michigan residents. This CE is free for all nurses until January 31, 2023. Take the CE here.

The Michigan Nurses Association (MNA) is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation

MNA-Endorsed Candidates Win in 2022 Election!

This year 90% of candidates endorsed by MNA for state office won their election! That means more allies in power to help us fight for a safe staffing law, workplace violence protections, and other priorities that matter to nurses and healthcare workers.

These victories were made possible thanks to the grassroots support of our members. Your donations to the nonpartisan MNA Political Action Committee go directly towards electing pro-nurse leaders to office! Will you help us build on this momentum? Click here to donate to the MNA PAC.

Dues Rate 2023

At the 2022 House of Delegates (HOD), the delegates voted to change the annual dues escalator. This was done in light of historic inflation. Prior to their vote, the bylaws called for dues to be adjusted based on the July Consumer Price Index (CPI). This year the July CPI was 8.5%. This would have created a monthly increase of $5.27 to your dues. Instead, with the passage of this bylaws change, for 2023 you will see an increase of only $1.86/mo.

The changed bylaws now read:

Article II Section 6 Dues

LBU members and Associate members shall pay annual dues at a rate established by the House of Delegates, including an annual Consumer Price Index escalator based on the July report before seasonal adjustment, not to exceed 3% unless approved by the House of Delegates. The dues rate for the upcoming year shall be communicated to members via publication in a statewide newsletter after the House of Delegates, prior to the new rate being put into effect.

This means that the increase of dues will be 3%, changing the monthly rate from $62.03 to $63.89 beginning January 2023. Please note that your dues rate may be higher if your local bargaining unit collects local dues.
