After Long Fight, Victory in Alpena!

Management at MidMichigan Hospital in Alpena tried to deny an MNA RN the base wages she was owed. They failed. Nurses at Alpena stood strong to enforce their contract. Shortly after MNA RNs held a membership meeting that was 20 times larger than the previous one and started wearing MNA masks around the hospital, the administration capitulated. Not only was the nurse paid her wages back in full, a principle much larger than the money was upheld. No matter the dollar amount in question, MNA RNs made it clear to management that they would not let the administration violate their contract. This process can be a lengthy one – in this case nurses had to stay strong for two years – but not backing down always pays off in the end. Shortly after the administration was finally forced to settle this arbitration, two other grievances were also promptly resolved. When we fight, we win.


Congratulations to Our Scholarship Winners!

Our union’s foundation has distributed thousands of dollars in scholarship money to current and aspiring nurses through the Evenly Grace Peraino Memorial Scholarship, the Margaret Louise Miller Leipold, RN Memorial Scholarship, and the Michigan Nurses Foundation Scholarships. Participate in a Research Project: Just Culture During the COVID-19 Pandemic 

Registered nurses or nurse leaders who provided care in a Michigan healthcare setting during the COVID-19 pandemic are encouraged to participate in an anonymous survey being conducted by Oakland University School of Nursing. After responding to demographic questions it will take approximately 15 minutes to complete the survey.

A reminder to our MNA leaders and members: Just as the Covid-19 pandemic has changed your work in your facilities, so has it changed how the MNA staff can work for you. In order to protect everyone, the expectation is that MNA staff will meet with you via zoom meetings until we get through the phased-in opening of the State of Michigan. There may be an exception to this, but only under the strictest conditions that ensure everyone’s physical safety. We realize this is not optimal because we know and value how important face to face conversations are. As the Michigan Nurses Association, we remain committed to meeting the highest standard for everyone’s safety just as we expect and demand other employers follow.

This year, voting is easier than ever. You can request a mail-in (absentee) ballot today. It's no longer required that you give a reason. Just go to

Ballots will be mailed out in late September, so get your request in now.

Mail-in voting is a great option for convenience and avoiding crowds at the polls during this pandemic.

Because of delays in the mail these days, you should mail your ballot back within 48 hours of getting it. Or, even better, put it in a drop box if your community has one.


Save the Date: MNA CE Forum Thursday, October 1

MNA will be holding a virtual CE forum this year, meaning you can get 4.0 credit hours attending without needing to leave your home. The topic for this year’s CE forum is: Smoke, Substances and Solutions, which includes two keynote speakers on marijuana use and patients. The event will go from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. eastern time and provide information both about substance use and misuse. The Michigan Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
