University of Michigan Health System: Reconsider Rebranding
The University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) is a recognized and trusted institution in our community and around the world. Therefore, we are disappointed in the proposed name change to “Michigan Medicine.”
We believe that:
- The money spent on implementing and marketing any new name would be better spent on patient care.
- The name change implies negative limits to UMHS’s mission. While it is important to treat sickness with ‘medicine,’ the institution should be more broadly concerned with health ̶ including prevention, research and education.
- The name change is divisive and inaccurate because term ‘medicine’ is associated primarily with physicians, yet so many other professionals contribute to UMHS.
