Recently, the Michigan House Health Policy Committee held a hearing on all three bills that are part of the Safe Patient Care Act.
This is a huge accomplishment that is a direct result of advocacy by nurses. Simply having a committee hearing means that RN staffing issues are receiving statewide attention. And now we have an opportunity to make even more progress.

The Safe Patient Care Act would limit the number of patients a hospital nurse can be assigned. The law would also limit mandatory RN overtime that compromises patients' care and require hospitals to disclose their actual RN-to-patient ratios.
More than 70 registered nurses from around the state attended the hearing to show support, including RNs from as far away as Marquette. Nurses also presented more than 4,000 postcards from registered nurses urging legislators to take action on the bills. We can’t let up.
